From the author of What Elephants Know, a 2017 ALA Notable Children’s Book and winner of the 2017 South Asia Book Award for Children’s and Young Adult Literature, comes this stunning companion novel about the complex relationship between people and nature coexisting in the Borderlands of 1970s Nepal.

Thirteen-year-old Nandu lives in the newly established Royal Elephant Breeding Center on the edge of the jungle. Here, the King’s elephants are to be raised under the protective watch of the stable. Nandu-along with his adoptive father Subba-sahib, his mentors, friends, and the rest of the elephant drivers-is tested by man and nature as earthquakes, drought, wild herds, and rumors of poachers threaten the Center.

When Nandu’s world is thrown into turmoil, so, too, is the world of Hira Prasad, the Center’s powerful bull elephant. An unbreakable bond of brotherhood drives Nandu and Hira Prasad together as they struggle to maintain the delicate natural order of life in the Borderlands.

Dinerstein’s poetic prose and scientific expertise come together in this breathtaking tale that transports the reader to the center of dangerous conflicts and heartbreaking friendships.

Review

This book was beautifully written. I really enjoyed Eric’s writing style. This story is a companion to WHAT ELEPHANTS KNOW. I found the story was understandable on its own and didn’t feel lost without the previous book.

You’ll find out below more about Eric but I can see how his experience would have helped when crafting this book.

I loved the message about conservation. Personally, I adore elephants but I have yet to meet one. Someday, I hope to. The country of Nepal is drawn out with wonderful description in this book. I felt like I was there.

Nandu and his elephant, Hira Prasad, have a special bond. Their connection is unique and I enjoyed reading about them during stressful times in the book. The characters were flawed but likeable. 5 stars

Review

I really enjoyed the sequel to Ash Princess. Theo has grown a lot since the first book. She’s clever and her years at court have given her a unique experience that she’s able to use.

This book is full of secrets! I love mystery so I was tearing through the pages, trying to figure out what would happen. Theo is in another tricky situation where she must decide who to trust.

I enjoyed learning more about Blaise. He’s one of Theo’s oldest friends. Then we have Prinz Soren 🙂 Theo had begun to develop a relationship with him in Ash Princess.

Things build towards the end and a surprise occurred that I didn’t expect. Can’t wait for the sequel! 4 stars.

The sequel to the instant New York Times bestseller that was “made for fans of Victoria Aveyard and Sabaa Tahir” ( Bustle ), Lady Smoke is an epic new fantasy about a throne cruelly stolen and a girl who must fight to take it back for her people.
The Kaiser murdered Theodosia’s mother, the Fire Queen, when Theo was only six. He took Theo’s country and kept her prisoner, crowning her Ash Princess–a pet to toy with and humiliate for ten long years. That era has ended. The Kaiser thought his prisoner weak and defenseless. He didn’t realize that a sharp mind is the deadliest weapon.
Theo no longer wears a crown of ashes. She has taken back her rightful title, and a hostage–Prinz Soren. But her people remain enslaved under the Kaiser’s rule, and now she is thousands of miles away from them and her throne.
To get them back, she will need an army. Only, securing an army means she must trust her aunt, the dreaded pirate Dragonsbane. And according to Dragonsbane, an army can only be produced if Theo takes a husband. Something an Astrean Queen has never done.
Theo knows that freedom comes at a price, but she is determined to find a way to save her country without losing herself.
A darkly enchanting page-turner you won’t be able to put down.” –Bustle on Ash Princess, Book 1 in the Ash Princess series

Theodosia was six when her country was invaded and her mother, the Fire Queen, was murdered before her eyes. On that day, the Kaiser took Theodosia’s family, her land, and her name. Theo was crowned Ash Princess–a title of shame to bear in her new life as a prisoner.

For ten years Theo has been a captive in her own palace. She’s endured the relentless abuse and ridicule of the Kaiser and his court. She is powerless, surviving in her new world only by burying the girl she was deep inside.

Then, one night, the Kaiser forces her to do the unthinkable. With blood on her hands and all hope of reclaiming her throne lost, she realizes that surviving is no longer enough. But she does have a weapon: her mind is sharper than any sword. And power isn’t always won on the battlefield.

For ten years, the Ash Princess has seen her land pillaged and her people enslaved. That all ends here.

About Laura:

Laura Sebastian was born and raised in South Florida (the Redlands and Key Largo) and has always loved telling stories–many apologies to her little brother who often got in trouble because of them. No copies of her first book, a Cinderella retelling about angels circa 2nd grade, remain. Thankfully.

After getting her BFA from Savannah College of Art and Design, she moved to New York City thinking that she would stay for a couple of years before going somewhere better suited for a small-town, sun-loving girl. Five years later, she’s still here and madly in love with it.

When Laura isn’t writing, she’s probably reading, baking cookies or cupcakes, buying more clothes than her overstuffed closet can fit, or forcing her lazy dog Neville to take a walk.

Talise knows more about the ocean than any kid in Topsea. Any adult, too. As the best-and only-bathymetrist in Topsea, Talise is able to predict important things about the sea, like the next tide (Severely Low with a threat of Wildcard) or the arrival of Seaweed Season. What she can’t predict, however, are her classmates’ behaviors. Sometimes it’s as if they’re speaking different languages.
When Talise discovers a mysterious message in a bottle, her classmates believe it must have been sent by someone stranded on a deserted island. (Not to be confused with a dessert island.) But Talise is convinced the message is meant for her. And it’s telling her to build a boat.
Everyone seems to think Talise is just being silly. Even Talise isn’t exactly sure why she has to build the boat. And who keeps sending those strange messages in a bottle, anyway? All Talise knows is that she’d better finish building her boat fast, because an Extremely High Tide is coming?

EXCERPT 1

Typically, Talise spent Saturday mornings with the ocean.

Sometimes she studied tides or examined tide pools. Other times, she put on her wet suit and flippers and buoyancy vest and everything else, and went for a dive in the deep sea—just not the deep-deep sea, since she wasn’t allowed to dive that deep without a buddy.

But the ocean had told Talise to build a boat. So today, she wanted to go to the boat supply shop.

First, Talise had to ask her parents. Fortunately, she was quite fluent in their dialect: Loving/Concerned, usually with a dash of Mystified. She started with her mother, who worked as a consultant. That meant people paid her for expert advice.

“I have never built a boat before, and I am feeling apprehensive,” Talise said. “I would like to consult an expert.

She turned to her father, who worked as a controller. That meant he controlled…Talise wasn’t entirely sure.

“I think that will help me take control of the situation,” she continued. “Along with some boatbuilding supplies, of course. I’ll just need you to accompany me with your credit card—”

“Talise,” her mom said. She had white skin and dark blond hair. “But we had something else in mind for today.”

“We know you’ve been spending a lot of time by yourself lately,” Talise’s father said. He had dark brown skin and black hair.

“Lately?” Talise repeated.

“Especially since Clara is visiting Puerto Rico for the next few weeks,” her mother said. “So we arranged for you to spend the day with Runa!”

“Runa?”

Perhaps Talise looked as upset on the outside as she felt on the inside, because her father patted her shoulder. “She’ll meet you at the pier. I’m sure you’ll have a great time!”

Talise was not so sure.

She squeezed her sea blob as she walked to the beach. She’d really been looking forward to visiting the boat supply shop! Or at the very least, spending more time with her boat schematic. Instead, she was stuck with Runa, the kid Talise had the least in common with.

“She wouldn’t be interested in boat supplies,” Talise muttered.

The air was approximately 71 degrees Fahrenheit, while the ocean was closer to 58 degrees. She’d nearly reached the endless pier when something caught her eye. Her feet tripped, her heart skipped, and she stumbled to a halt, staring at the familiar collection of odd bubbles.

Wiggling her fingers, Talise stuck her hand into the pleasantly mucky sand and grabbed something hard. She wrapped her fingers around it and tugged.

SHLERPP!!!

It was another bottle, even crustier that the first one. Talise pulled out the cork and coughed at the musty smell. She shook out a rolled-up piece of very thin paper, or maybe it was tree bark.

The ocean had sent her another message!

Notification: Teeth

Courtesy of the Town Committee for Dental and Coastal Hygiene

What’s even better than beachcombing for seashells? Beachbrushing … for teeth!

Teeth are a very important part of your skeleton. They’re also fun to collect. Here are some of the types of teeth you might find on Topsea’s beaches.

Buckteeth: fun for parties

Sweet teeth: do not eat

Barnacles: these might look like teeth, but they are not actually teeth

Horns: also not teeth

Tusks: also not—wait, these are in fact teeth

Molars: for chewing

Elongated molars: longer than necessary, nobody knows why

Narwhal tusks: fancy sorts of teeth that are often mistaken for unicorn horns; one belongs to a magical animal, the other grows out of a horse’s forehead

Saber teeth: these teeth are extinct

Snapped-off fangs: sharp, pointy, mean-spirited, mostly useless

Oolong: this is a type of tea, not teeth

Pincers: beware

Canines: whimsically named after mythological creatures

Beaks: not teeth—or are they?

Wisdom teeth: these teeth are quite valuable

Baleen: these teeth are a trap

There are many places to display your teeth collection: on your windowsill, under your bed, in a heavy-duty safe. Don’t forget to floss!

Note: if you ever find a rubber duck with teeth … we don’t know what to tell you.

Eighteen-year-old Brenna Whit is entering college as a freshman and starting to meet new people, but she hides a dark secret. Because of an accident that happened three years ago, her spirit wanders the Fade whenever she falls asleep. It’s something she wants to keep hidden from the world, but when she sees someone watching her in spirit form, she fears the secret’s out. With new friends, possibly new enemies, school, and a new crush, Brenna has too much to worry about for just her freshman year of college.

Review

I loved this book so much! It’s a New Adult (NA) book set at Brenna’s college. I hope more NA books will be published in the future. I love reading about older protagonists figuring out life after high school.

Brenna is sarcastic and hilarious. I love her as the main character. Sarah is a lovely writer. The world came alive to me as I read.

One of my favorite parts has to do with Brenna. She walks in the spirit plane – the Fade – when she is sleeping. Also, I’m a huge fan of mystery and this book is full of it. I was always guessing what would happen next.  Intrigued?! Check it out:)

Can’t wait for book 2! 5 stars ❤

Sarah

About Sarah:

A native of Richmond, Virginia, Sarah Lampkin is a 2015 graduate from Lynchburg College with a master’s degree in English. Since graduation, Sarah moved to Northern Virginia to work in the IT field as a Technical Writer while continuing her research for her graduate school thesis. When she isn’t work, Sarah continues her Celtic mythology research and Gaelic studies, while working on the Dead Dreamer series.

Although she currently lives in Northern Virginia, Sarah frequently travels back home to Richmond to visit family, friends, and her godchildren. During the winter months, she is in Richmond more frequently to spend time in the woods hunting and contemplating the meaning of life. She doesn’t always succeed in both endeavors, but the music of nature is worth it for peace of mind.

In her free time, she likes to play RPG video games, and rock climbing. To make sure she can make the most out of her day, she wakes up at 4am every morning to work on her fitness, so in the evening she has time to continue writing. Her passion for writing has been around since high school where she wrote her first short story. It continued as she worked towards her bachelor’s degree, and that is where the Dead Dreamer series began. Although only self- published via online, Sarah’s dream is to write for a living and continue to create fictional worlds where her mind can reside.

Her work mainly focuses on Celtic themes, mixed with elements from the spiritual world. And her characters always have a flair of attitude and sarcasm because writing damsels in distress is something she just can’t do.

Loie’s Review

I thoroughly enjoyed K.L. Bone’s novels. She is a fantastic writer and captures the voices of all the characters super well 🙂

The romance in the story was executed perfectly between Connor and Amelia ❤ Loved the adventure plot, particularly when Amelia found ancient scrolls and read through them.

This story ended on a cliffhanger and eep! Anxiously waiting to read the next one! Loved the history and worldbuilding. Great job, K.L.! 5 Stars.

YA Author Interview & Giveaway: Jenna Morland

I’ve started a monthly highlight blog of Canadian authors and upcoming authors. I’m so excited to announce that Jenna Morland is my first author participating!

Today is her book birthday! Let’s get started.

Loie: It’s great to have you here and celebrate the release of your magical and romantic debut, Empress Unveiled. I just want to say how amazing it is to meet a fellow Canadian Young Adult writer. I loved this book so much, and I cannot wait to read more of your work!

Jenna: Thank you! I think it is so cool that you are featuring Canadian authors and upcoming authors. I really appreciate all the support and love. I am ecstatic that you enjoyed Empress Unveiled and I am beyond grateful for all the wonderful reviews so far.

Okay, on to the questions 😊

Loie: How long have you been writing?

Jenna: Years ago, I dabbled in song-writing but Empress Unveiled was the first piece of fiction I had ever written. To be honest, I was terrible at English. Actually, I got a C in Grade 12 English! But I did read—a lot. I have always been a creative person and I found it fascinating to rearrange words until they created something beautiful. I started writing Empress Unveiled 2 years ago, and it just kind of spilled out of me. The first draft only took a couple of months to write.

Loie: Wow, sounds like it was the story you had to tell 🙂 I love that! What is your favorite genre to write and why?

Jenna: I really enjoyed writing fantasy. The only limit is your imagination and I find that freeing. I also love romance! I am such a sucker for a good love triangle. I find the complicated trials of the human heart to be inspiring.

Loie: I love writing fantasy and romance as well, haha! Who inspired Swayzi? Sidenote: I love Swayzi so much ❤

Jenna: I love that you love her!! Swayzi is a combination of many characters I have loved over the years. I think there is a piece of me in Swayzi as well, but mostly, I created a character that I wanted to read. She is imperfect, awkward, and most of all—relatable. You can’t help but root for her!

Loie: What books have influenced you the most?

Jenna: Without a doubt, Harry Potter. JK came into my life when I was 12. That awkward time in everyone’s life when you go from being a kid to becoming a teenager. It kept me young, it made me dream and it fanned my curiosity of the journey the imagination can take you on. Twilight also had a big impact on me. It was a beast, and it affected the world. Stephanie Meyer created a story that people young and old could relate to. Like me, she had no experience as a writer and was a stay-at-home mom. She made me believe anything is possible!

Loie: JK Rowling and Stephenie Meyer both had a huge impact on me as well ❤ When I was thirteen, JK made me realize I could dream up stories like she did. Stephenie made me fall in love with storytelling and romance💕

Do you find anything particularly challenging when writing?

Jenna: Now that I have been through so many grueling rounds of editing it’s easy to pick apart my writing. I am currently working on the sequel to Empress Unveiled and it took me a long time to let go of perfecting my writing as I worked. It was stifling my creativity.

Loie: Ah, yes. I understand that feeling completely. I worked with two published authors this summer for a writing mentorship called #WriteMentor. We edited my seafaring fantasy a lot and I learned a ton, haha. After you’ve been through an editing process, you start to pick up on imperfections as you go. I love NaNoWriMo month because I dive into a new project and try to get the words down and worry about editing later.

How did you find your publisher and what was the process like working with an editor?

Jenna: #PitMad on Twitter! I submitted my “elevator pitch” and Oftomes was one of the publishers to like my tweet. I sent them my manuscript and I didn’t hear back from them. I received an offer from another publisher and like any writers wish, I was able to send out the “Offer Received” email to all the agents and publishers I had queried. I had this weird feeling that Oftomes was meant to publish Empress Unveiled. In fact, I said that in my last email to them. They sent me an offer 24 hours later.

I had two different editors and each experience was different. There were times when I really enjoyed it, I could see the beauty that was formed with collaboration and it made me excited. I knew the story was better off. Other times—it was awful. I love the creative side of writing, the tedious details of editing on the other hand, was a struggle for me.

Loie: Can you tell us anything about the sequel to Empress Unveiled? Or other projects you are working on?

Jenna: I love where the sequel is going right now. I am so excited to be in Empress and to fall harder for these characters. There are new additions to the cast, and surprises that will leave you stunned.

I do have one other project that I had to set aside to write the sequel and I will go back to it. It’s something very different from Empress but I love the characters and the idea of it. I need more hours in a day!

Loie: Favorite 2018 book?

Jenna: Turtles All the Way Down!

Loie: What’s your most anticipated read of this year?

Jenna: I am really looking forward to reading Saving Death by R.L. Endean. She is my Oftomes sister and from what I hear—it’s amazing!

Loie: Oooo. I can’t wait to read that one as well 🙂 Thanks so much for visiting, Jenna! Huge congrats to you on your fantastic debut.

Jenna: Thank you so much for asking me to do this interview, I really enjoyed it! I am kind of freaking out that Empress Unveiled has been released into the wild, but I seriously loved the journey to publication and I can’t wait to do it all over again with the sequel.

Loie: Thanks again, Jenna!
