Hi friends! We’re getting down to a few days left of this blog series. Not to worry 🙂 I have something fun planned for January that hopefully will give us all a boost 😉
I’m going to share a bit about Spring Song Press and FORESHADOW: A Serial YA Anthology, and following that, details on the submission.
Spring Song Press
Today, I found two anthologies (to make up for yesterday). One is a noblebright submission opportunity with Spring Song Press. C.J. Brightley, an indie author, is the editor for Spring Song Press. She seeks noblebright fantasy pieces. Let’s look at what this genre is.
C.J. quoted C.S. Lewis on her website: Since it is so likely that they will meet cruel enemies, let them at least have heard of brave knights and heroic courage.
This genre has at least one character with idealistic and noble motives, who attempts to do the right thing out of principle. The character is still flawed and broken, yet their actions are defined by sacrifice, love, kindness, honesty, and integrity.
The character’s good qualities aren’t shown as naivety or cluelessness but shown to be worthwhile. Noblebright characters might choose generosity when it hurts, or choose to be kind even when tempted to be unkind.
In a noblebright story, villains have hope, and their story might even have a redemptive ending. It’s not a guarantee, but a possibility. Read more about it here.
More below on the opportunity.
FORESHADOW: A Serial YA Anthology
The other opportunity is with FORESHADOW: A Serial YA Anthology. This is a unique online venue for young adult short stories. They are committed to showcasing underrepresented voices, highlighting the power and beauty of YA, and boosting emerging voices!
Emily X.R. Pan is one of the Editors-in-chief. She is the author of The Astonishing Color of After. Nova Ren Suma is the other Editor-in-chief, and recently released, A Room Away from the Wolves, this past September.
Spring Song Press: Steam and Lace Anthology
This is a Steampunk call. The stories can be 1,000 to 10,000 words long. The anthology will be published in both paperback and ebook formats.
They prefer previously unpublished submissions. Multiple submissions are encouraged but they’d rather they weren’t simultaneous to other presses.
They hope to respond to everyone within one month of the closing date. If you don’t hear from them, it’s okay to query them, if it’s been longer than two months. The submission period opened on October 1, 2018, and ends January 1, 2019.
The story should address the “Steam and Lace” steampunk theme. They’re seeking steampunk settings with heroic and clever characters. Magic and steam-powered technology combine in a setting, offering danger and possibility.
They are open to settings other than the more common Victorian-inspired European setting. They also are open to stories set in real or fantastical places 🙂
FORESHADOW: A Serial YA Anthology: YA Short Story
This is a serial anthology published monthly. Each issue features three stories, and one of them is a new voice.
The next deadline to submit by is February 1, 2019.
They’re looking for original YA short stories. Check out their FAQ to learn what they mean by YA or young adult.
The word length for stories should be 2,000 and 7,000 words.
New Voices Guidelines
Every issue of FORESHADOW will feature a short story from a “new voice”. This is a writer who is very early in their career. Their story will be selected and introduced by an established and loved author.
Include “NEW VOICE” next to your name in the subject line of the email and mention it in your cover note.
Foreshadowing a Clue
Each story in this anthology will be introduced by a single-word title. This will suggest what to expect 🙂 Foreshadowing in storytelling is dropping hints and clues throughout the story.
To find that title, that one word, ask yourself how would you distill your story down into one word? This word will act as a clue. Some examples are Magic, Heartbreak, Canary, Starstruck, or Heartbreak.
When you submit your story, include your one-word clue.
They do accept simultaneous submissions.
